A collection of tragic stories, in which “Al-Manfaluti” aroused feelings of sorrow and grief. You hardly move from one story until the next is sadder and more miserable. The whole collection is a tragedy, most of which share the misery of lovers, the misery of the poor, the grief of the oppressed, and the torment of the bereaved. These are indeed lessons to be shed while reading each story. You see in “The Orphan” that life meant that the two lovers were forced to meet; Death was more merciful to them. In “The Hijab,” Al-Manfaluti calls on people not to be attracted to Western traditions. And to the story of “Granada”, where Muslims try to preserve their religion after losing their land. “Al-Manfaluti” explains the impact of addiction on the individual, and how it leads to falling into the “abyss.” “Al-Manfaluti” reaches the pinnacle of tragedy, and makes us shed tears in our hearts when we read “The Victim,” “Margaret’s Diary,” and “The Rest of the Diary.” She feels as if the misery of the world has been placed on that poor Margaret.
